All clear issued, shelter in place order lifted for residents and visitors on Galena, Columbia, and Davis

(September 20, 2023) – Telluride, CO --- The Telluride Marshal’s Department is actively searching for an individual believed to be in possession of a weapon. Local law enforcement has initiated a coordinated effort to locate and apprehend the suspect.

At approximately 6:00 pm MST on Tuesday, September 19, the Town of Telluride Marshal’s Department received reports of a road rage incident in which the suspect threatened another driver with a firearm.  The individual with a weapon fled from his vehicle around Davis Street and Galena Ave. Officers promptly responded to the scene and proceeded to establish a secure search perimeter to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.

Due to the violent nature of the crime, the Telluride Marshal’s Department issued a shelter-in-place order in the surrounding area at 8:30 pm MST. Officers searched on foot and utilized two drones with forward-looking infrared (FLIR) technology to search for heat signatures, though none were detected.

The extensive search involving the Telluride Marshal’s Department, Mountain Village Police Department, and the San Miguel Sheriff’s Office ceased at 10:40 pm MST when the area was officially cleared.

Those with any information regarding the incident or suspect involved, please immediately call 911 to report their location and provide as much information as possible to assist law enforcement in their efforts to locate and apprehend the suspect safely.

The Town of Telluride Marshal’s Department will continue to work in collaboration with the Mountain Village Police Department and San Miguel County Sheriff's Office while the investigation is ongoing. Updates on this situation will be provided as they become available.

A former Victorian mining town in southwest Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, Telluride was incorporated in 1977 as a home-rule municipality. Set in a box canyon amid forested peaks at the base of the popular Telluride ski-and-golf resort, the town’s historic district houses landmarks like the Sheridan Opera House, a performing arts venue originally built in 1913, and the Telluride Historical Museum, which showcases local history in a converted hospital built in 1896.
